Wheel Studs Kits

Wheel Studs… a bit more complex than people think.  Budget kits use budget materials that look like the real thing but are often functionally inferior.  We’ve put together a set that combines trusted names with safe options.  There’s nothing wrong with the factory Lotus lug bolts—they are good quality and fit both factory and most aftermarket wheels but if you’d like some pizazz, here are some reasons to switch to our wheel studs:

Titanium & Aluminum...

We’ve seen a few titanium studs & nuts and lots of aluminum nuts on the market, and we have seen  failures.  We don’t know what the cause of these failures are but our opinion is that they do require more maintenance and inspections than steel.

We do not believe there are any compromises worth increasing the risk of a loose tire, and we therefore do not recommend alternative materials for consumer wheel hardware.

  • Get rid of the cheap-looking lugs:  If your stock silver wheel bolts are clashing with your black wheels or if you just don’t like the economical look of the Lotus supplied bolts, swap them out for a modern look;
  • Easier wheel mounting:  Some people have found mounting wheels to be easier & faster with wheels studs because they guide the wheel onto the hub so you don’t have to hunt for that dark first hole with your lug bolt;
  • Because... racecar: And ours have a great balance of looks, performance, and price;
  • Compatibility with spacers: We don’t typically recommend wheels spacers but if you do, stock lugs may not have the depth to penetate the hub and securly keep your wheels on.

Our kits have been compiled with high-quality components at a reasonable price.  After seeing many budget kits offered, we have sourced safe components from respected manufactures and assembled them specifically for our supporters.

Lug Bolts Are Consumables!

Retailers don’t like to admit this but wheel studs & lug bolts (whether factory or aftermarket) are maintenance items.  With repeated cycles, they can stretch and may eventually lose their ability to properly  fasten and hold your wheel to the car.  For most cars, this is not a big deal because wheels get removed & reinstalled infrequently but if you have multiple sets of wheels and your car sees a lot of changes, you should plan for a replacement schedule.

The frequency of replacement is affected by how often the studs are torqued (tightened) and how careful the installer is.  The more the studs are torqued, the more likely they will be fatigued & stretched. Equally important is how the wheels are tightened.  Nearly all franchise tire stores and dealerships use an impact gun and just jam the lugs/nuts overly tight in one quick, money-making, time-saving motion.  Hand starting with a final 2 or 3 stage sequencial, star-pattern tightening with a torque wrench is the only proper & safe way to repeatedly install wheels.

As a frame of reference, professional race teams renew their wheel studs at least once a season.

Our Auto.Perf wheel studs are manufactured by a TUV approved, OEM supplier in Europe. They have a unique shoulder design that stops the stud at the proper installation depth.  These studs will work with both original factory Lotus wheels, our BC Forged wheels, and nearly any other wheel designed for the Evora.  All studs are 10.9 grade, cold forged from steel wire, and black zinc plated.  Take an up-close look at our studs and compare them to the budget kits… you’ll see the difference in the shoulder design.  Our studs are available with a hex head to ease initial installation or the slicker bullet head.

Our matching Auto.Perf lug nuts have a 17mm Hex head with the common 60° taper seat, the same seat as the factory Lotus wheel bolts.  As the name implies, these matching lug nuts are sourced from the same supplier as our wheels studs and are available in black zinc plating or silver zinc plating.

Our  splined wheel lug nuts are geniune Muteki brand from a factory authorized U.S. distributor.  Often copied with generic iron, Mutekis are made with cold forged 1008 steel, are the real deal, and have been trusted for decades.  They are splined for security and require the included matching socket for install & removal making them much more anti-theft than traditional lug nuts.  They come in sets of 20 in the original Muteki packaging, and are available in Black, Chrome, Red, Blue, and Purple!

All kits include thread locker fluid.  Hex head studs include an allen key for installation.  Splined lug nuts include one security socket; additional sockets are available too (we keep one in the car and one in our shop tool box).
